City of Charleston Representation

About This Case

The City of Charleston is one of the most attractive cities for residential and commercial development on the East Coast. However, its land development regulations and political dynamics are often complex, time-consuming, and fraught with peril.

Ross Appel served on the City of Charleston’s Board of Zoning Appeals (Zoning Division) for more than three years before his election to Charleston City Council. He has an intimate familiarity with the City of Charleston’s processes and political dynamics. While he no longer represents clients in front of City of Charleston zoning boards, he is permitted under the South Carolina Ethics Act to provide general land use consultation services to clients operating in the City of Charleston.

On one such occasion, we were retained by an out-of-state developer interested in developing a workforce housing project on the peninsula. Before our involvement, they were unclear on how to proceed. They needed help navigating the City of Charleston’s complex regulations involving affordable housing. We efficiently brought the development team up to speak, helped make the necessary introductions, and offered strategic guidance that helped make this positive, community-centered project a reality.
